Niche Or Micro Niche? That Is The Question

Internet Marketing can be lot's of fun IF you let yourself enjoy it. Many internet marketers enter into internet marketing expecting the world to be handed to them on a platter being that they are selling on the internet. The sheer volume of traffic on the net promises easy money to those seeking it. However, this hardly ever happens, mainly due to a sever misunderstanding as to how peoples minds work. Make no mistake, selling to people is a tough business if you are not in the right niche and the right niche for you may not be the right niche for somebody else. Additionally, there are niches that are not buying niches. Some are too broad and some are too narrow.

The Niche. Broad niches are ones like "Marketing". They are broad simply because they can be broken down into so many different and smaller parts. For example, marketing can be broken down into categories such as internet marketing and email marketing. Even though these are closely related, they are still separate categories and can and should be approached accordingly. Broad niches such as these are usually more competitive. That being said, there is usually much more traffic to be had for those that dominate broad keywords such as these. Should you pursue such broad keywords? Is the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) that is required at this level manageable or eve achievable? Yes, it is, but is has to be dominated through micro niches.

The Micro Niche. Micro niches are much smaller, much more easily dominated sub-categories of their parent categories. Examples of sub-parts to our previously mentioned sub-categories of internet marketing and email marketing would include search terms that revolve around true long-tail keywords such as "internet marketing for small business" or "email marketing for beginners". Search terms with more words that are more tightly focused such as these although they have less search traffic, are more easily dominated with less SEO efforts.

Use Micro Niches To Establish Your Niche Presence. Search engines no longer serve main index pages for specific long-tail queries as they did when they were more-or-less directory search engines. Modern search engines serve website sub-pages that have titles and tags that closely match the search query at hand. Domination of these micro niches are the key to ultimately dominating broad search terms. Although this takes more work, it is the only way to use SEO in an efficient way.

Bottom Line. You have to be in this for the long haul. IM, SEM and SEO success do not come overnight. Effort is required. Domination is possible if you attack one micro niche at a time with a well optimized article on your site or blog. SEO efforts focused around building links to individual pages or articles on your site will help your individual long-tail optimized web pages dominate long-tail search terms. In time, you will also dominate macro niches and reap both the traffic and monetary benefits.
