subject: Five Simple Steps To Incorporating More Exercise Into Your Daily City Life [print this page]

Living in a city such as London can be everything that you expect it to be - fun, exciting, full of opportunities and just about every different type of cuisine and leisure activity that you could ever want.

The one that it doesn't have - or that it doesn't allow its residents to have, rather - is time.

With so much to see and do, many people struggle to fit in a full day at work and a relatively decent amount of socialising into their lives, never mind other things that they should be looking at - most notably exercise.

However, fitting exercise into your city life isn't as difficult as you might think and the following five steps explain how you can do it quickly and easily.

1. When you're using the London Tube, plan your journey in advance and see if you can get off a stop earlier. It may be more convenient to get off at a station that stops right outside of your office, but if the previous stop is only a 10 minute walk away, that's 20 minutes exercise each day.

And don't forget to take the stairs instead of the escalators, too.

2. On 30 June 2010, Transport for London (TfL) introduced a scheme within the City of London that allowed for people to rent bicycles from one 'station', use them and then return them to another 'station'.

Whilst cycling in London isn't for everyone, it's always worthwhile giving it ago - it'll not only get you fit, but it's likely to save you money, too.

3. Although London might be packed full of sights and attractions that seem to be located all over the city and is host to a number of fantastic transport options that allow you to travel all across London, the truth is that London is actually somewhat of a compact city.

It's because of this that if you plan your daily journeys, you may be able to walk to your destinations, something which will help your weight loss, your bank balance and reduce your carbon footprint.

4. Attending a London gym is arguably the most obvious way to get fit and healthy, but a lot of people don't consider it as they don't believe that any London gym will be open when they want to attend.

However, in a city that seems to never sleep, it would be very unlikely if you couldn't find a gym that wasn't open when you wanted to go, whether that was 5 o'clock in the morning of 11 o'clock at night.

5. As a city that has grocery shops of every type located within walking distance to almost every residential area, there's no reason why anyone needs to carry out just one large grocery shop each week, apart from the fact that you may be able to save a few pounds - financially - by doing so.

If you take the time to shop for groceries three of four times a week, however, you'll find that you lose pounds in terms of weight instead, as you spend your time walking to and from the shops.
