The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has decided to centralize the form filing location for naturalization of qualifying family of deceased service members. The USCIS will now accept the applications for naturalization at the Nebraska Service Center (NSC.)
Usually if a foreign national meets all the requirements imposed by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA,) he/she acquires U.S. citizenship through the process of naturalization. The applicants are obliged to file USCIS Form N-400 to acquire naturalization. A foreign national is eligible for naturalization, only if he/she is a continuous resident in the United States for a period, able to read, can write and speak English, has good moral character, and abides by the principles of the U.S. constitution.
A specialized team has been formed to carry out processing of eligible applications for naturalization for the members of the U.S. armed forces and their families that are received at NSC.
Under section 319(d) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA,) the spouse, child, or parent of deceased serviceman who was a U.S. citizen and was serving on duty actively at the time of death, can apply for naturalization by filing USCIS Form N-400 at the Nebraska Service Center, regardless of the geographic location.
Naturalization applicants who belong to the military community, including service members, their spouses, and children, are expected to submit their USCIS Form N-400 applications at the NSC. Based on their residence, other applicants applying for naturalization should file USCIS Form N-400 at the allocated facility.
The change of form filing location has been indicated by the revision of instructions for USCIS Form N-400 application. Immediately after the form instructions were updated, the new filing location has become operative. The processing of applications may be delayed if they are filed at the incorrect location. The USCIS will then send the incorrectly filed USCIS Form N-400 applications to the NSC.
