The fortress was taken over during the 14th century by Mohammad Beghara, who included it in his plans to rebuild the city. Legend has it that the Mughal Emperor Humayun led a team of warriors to climb the walls of the fort, with the use of iron spikes, so that the warriors would be able to climb inside the city and open the gates to enable the rest of the troupes to come inside and lay siege to the city. In this manner, the city fell and with the fall of the empire, the beautiful structure of the Champaner unassumingly fell into the hands of the Marathas.

The sultanates that sprung up in the various regions that surround the Champaner were a huge influence on the structures architectural style and carvings.
