When it comes to Internet marketing (IM), the lifeblood of any online business is an email list of customers or potential customers. The matter of how to get more customers with list building is probably one of the most important activities an IM professional (you, for instance) will pay attention to doing on a regular basis.

Building a list in a consistent manner is a matter of following a few sound principles and then jacking those actions up just a bit more over time. However, no list can be built that is good for any length of time if the website the online business has is poorly designed and badly presented. So for starters, you need to go back through your site and make sure it has content-rich, and loaded with interesting tidbits.

The site needs to be easy to navigate, also. In addition, it should not be any more confusing than absolutely necessary. Visitors may come there once, but if they don't find the information they're looking for they'll quickly leave, never to return. Additionally, the site needs to have a landing page that'll lead a customer further through the site to where the sales pitch or purchase can be made.

Make sure the landing page is concise and to the point. It also needs to have a direct call to action ("click here to receive your free report") and that a method for gathering potential customer emails is evident. This is called an opt-in, and it's here where the list can be built steadily and with vigor. However, in order to get somebody to give you an email you are going to need to give him or her something for free.

This free something is usually a 4 to 8 page report on whatever it is you feel is of interest to this particular customer base in your latest marketing campaign, for example. Alternatively, it could be an eBook on the same subject matter, or even some useful (and free) software. Do not worry...you can get most all of these items for free yourself. The point is that you are making sure you are building an ever-growing list of potential customers.

Put all of these things together and make sure you give customers what they are looking for and your list building activities should go along smoothly enough. Never take a possible customer for granted, and always pay attention to that list. Water and feed it, much as you water and fertilize a rich plot of earth that has been seeded with crops that are going to feed you for a long time.
