Boys and girls will tend to change and grow at an uneven pace, and individuals may be at stage 3 in one area of their lives but still hovering between 1 and 2 in another area.

According to Erickson, adolescence is marked by distinct 'crisis', they are facing some crucial point in developing 'identity'. They are answering or at least confronting identity questions about world view, career direction, interests, gender orientation, values, philosophy of life, and aspirations for the future.
