subject: Adolescence [print this page]

Too often, we are unwilling to recognize the leap from early childhood to adolescence, with its correspondingly complex growth. And another leap occurs between elementary school and middle school. Studies become specific, homework assignments become lengthy and complex.

You will rarely hear or see me refer to the teenage years as adolescence. This is because the term adolescence makes the teenage years sound like a disease or condition that needs to be cured. Sometimes we forget that their struggles are real because the level of challenges they face are so different from the level of challenges we face on a daily basis.

Thankfully, adolescence doesnt last forever. And, in most cases, if you have truly good, solid values that youve transmitted with love, your adolescent will pass through this phase of turmoil and breakdown and come out the other side as a person who makes you really proud.

Adolescence is an important period of ones life. Adolescence is in fact the sine quoon of life. Adolescence is like a bridge between the stage of infancy and adulthood. It is during this stage of adolescence that varied changes takes place in ones body both physical and psychological.

Adolescence experiences growth in height and weight. Adolescents are virtual hero worshippers. They choose their own ideal in their life that they consider it as their ideal source and thus follow the path as has been laid out by their ideal hero. Adolescents are moreover socially conscious people. They cannot stand any injustice meted out to them

If one takes again this definition of the end of adolescence and that one tries an application on people who live around us, force is to note that the average age limit of end of adolescence is very difficult to evaluate. One could be tempted to propose 25 years like completion date of adolescence, because it is at this age that the calcification of the clavicle is finished (fine growth) .

It is important that these stages are not understood legalistically or rigidly. Different individuals, in different circumstances, will pass through these changes at different speeds, and sometimes unevenly. Boys and girls will tend to change and grow at an uneven pace, and individuals may be at stage 3 in one area of their lives but still hovering between 1 and 2 in another area.

Adolescence is a historically grounded social invention, the product of concerted attempts of socially and morally anxious nineteenth and twentieth-century developmental psychologists, moral reformer, sociologists, medical specialists, and other emerging professionals to control the socialization of increasing number of detached youth. The new invention marked the recognition of youth as a life stage; a period of time between irresponsible childhood and married adulthood.

Adolescence is a period of development shaped both by biological unfolding and by societal and cultural norms and expectations. According to Erickson, adolescence is marked by distinct 'crisis', they are facing some crucial point in developing 'identity'. They are answering or at least confronting identity questions about world view, career direction, interests, gender orientation, values, philosophy of life, and aspirations for the future.
