subject: Really Thin Hair Can Be Irreversible If Allowed To Progress Past A Certain Point [print this page]

Each day you wake up and only to find more of your precious hair traveling down the drain, until one day you wake up to find that you now have a case of really thin hair. There is not a lot more to go down the drain, so chances are you will not have to hire a plumber to clean out all the hair in the future. But all humor aside failure to understand and address the cause of really thin hair can in fact lead to baldness. Certainly, there can be any number of contributing factors which accelerate hair loss ranging from poor nutrition to medications, but ultimately if your scalp and hair follicles are healthy enough to support new growth then you can turn this ship around before it sails onto the barren bald rocks. The most common cause of balding is androgenetic alopecia or male/female pattern baldness. It is the leading cause of really thin hair, accounting for nine out of every ten cases in men and about one out of every four or five in women. I have a neighbor with this condition and he has lost all of his hair on top, and looks like the hair extraction ferry gave him a serious trim on just the top of his head. In fact I didnt even know he was bald for a couple a years, since he always wore a baseball cap. He is only 40 years young. In women the term really thin hair is quite appropriate due to the appearance of female pattern baldness. Female pattern balding goes around the whole top of the head and could be described as more of generally progressive thinning than as balding. This has to do with the differences in hormone and enzyme receptor sites which are dispersed somewhat evenly on a womans scalp. The cause of really thin hair caused by male and female pattern balding is a formidable combination of heredity and the androgen hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Over a couple of hair cycles the accumulation of DHT in the follicle causes it to begin shrinking, which in turn alters the natural hair replacement cycle. As more and more follicles are impacted the balding spreads and will not reverse itself without some form of intervention. The most often used treatment for slowing this condition is topical minoxidil (Rogaine, Loniten). At some point really thin hair turns into baldness and the number of treatment options shrinks as quick as a hair follicle loaded with DHT. Sadly, the only option at this point will be hair transplant surgery. On the other hand if you still have some hair to protect you will have a number of excellent treatment options. What Next? There are currently a handful of hair re-growth products (specially formulated for both men and women) which have been proven effective both in blocking harmful hormones and bringing the all important dead hair follicles back to life. These specially formulated treatments can be used both as a preventative tool, starting before hair loss becomes severe, or after loss of hair has become noticeable. Whatever the level of balding or thinning you are experiencing these products could be just what is needed to overcome this latest life challenge.
