The term "long tail" is constantly used in online marketing these days and is the buzzword of the moment. Very often, these long tail keywords, are less searched and often overlooked words and phrases, that can many times get more traffic combined than a broader, more generic keyword ever could.

So, understanding the concept of long tail keywords and applying it to your business can get you new visitors and new profits as well. For instance, if the keyword "dog training" gets around 2,420 searches per day, start looking at the lesser searched keyword phrases in that niche: dog training collars, dog potty training careers, dog training careers, and so on.

If you add up all the long-tail keywords, which are easier to dominate in the search engine results pages, it equals to more traffic than you might get if you simply went after Dog Training alone

You would have a much greater change to reach the first page in Google, for the term "dog training DVD" with 360,000 competing websites, than you would for "dog training", having about 10 million competing websites for that keyword.

Imagine how much work and what a budget an exceptional SEO expert must have, to rank number one for a broad term like "mp3". On the other hand, ranking for a term like "1980s rock mp3s" might be a lot easier, because it is a long tail keyword. If the term gets 50 searches per day, and you rank number three, then you might get 20 or 30 hits to your website per day.

Being at number 31, 563 for the term "mp3", will not get you much traffic from that at all. This is why it is very important to find good long tail keywords to bring you more traffic, especially when it's harder to get placement with more popular keywords.

Some marketers believe they have to rank well for the prime keyword phrases and shun long tail keywords, and others are using long tail keywords to reach a demographic that has money in hand. Instead of getting traffic from people searching the word "golf", it is much easier to attract someone who types in "Taylor Made R580XD Titanium Driver", and could be potentially much more profitable.

The more specific searcher, is often someone who is more ready to buy, because they know what they want. Someone typing in "golf", may want to know its history, for a project, might want to take a golf vacation, or could be interested in attending a local tournament. That will not do you any good if your site is about selling golf clubs, but the long phrase will cater to the right crowd specifically.

So, pick your keywords and phrases carefully. Separate your broad, generic terms from your long tail phrases so that you can monitor your search engine positioning and see how your keyword list is performing for you.

Remember that more common, generic keywords are more expensive because more advertisers will be bidding on them (e.g. "discount blackberries"). Less common keywords (e.g. "who sells blackberry curves online"), are less expensive simply because fewer advertisers will bid on them. These keyword are called long tail keywords, and as you've seen earlier, these can be often much more profitable for your online business.
