In today's world, three are many options to choose from. There is a choice in just about everything in life from basic necessities to cell phones. Decades ago you had fewer choices. Today the options are endless. Choosing between quality and quantity, price or customer service, convenience or lowest prices etc. all have become a way of life.
The same applies to jobs. Today, working is not just about getting money to feed, shelter and clothe ourselves. Increased standards of living and better education has increased options for many more people. With the increase of choices available to people the need for motivating employees is the key to a successful team of employees living their jobs and not just playing a role in their lives for 8 to 12 hours a day.
Offering a job no longer holds an employee. If you are going to hold a qualified employee you must offer them more than the ability to come to work and take home a paycheck to feed their family. You need to offer them the ability to participate and rise to new challenges. Your best of employees will go to better places to work if you don't give them a reason to stay.
As a boss you have to learn not to control your employees with your superiority. The title does not encompass control. Motivation is the power that persuades an employee to do what you want him/her to do at the time needed. Our survival in the human race is based squarely on motivation. Using motivation to empower employees will go further than merely telling or asking someone to do the job.
