Just a few short years on the market and electronic cigarettes have made plenty of waves and already have a loyal fan base, in spite of much negativity aimed their way via the media. It's probably fair to say that communities have been formed and the numbers of e smokers is growing at a rapid pace.
Perhaps the largest parts of these communities are formed by traditional tobacco cigarette smokers looking for a smoking alternative, especially if that alternative can help them cut down the amount of tobacco cigarettes they smoke. There is a firm belief within these groups that the e cig is at least less harmful to them than what they have smoked for years. Why, because there is no tobacco in them.
Producers and sellers of e smoking products are generally prohibited from marketing the e cigs as either safer, healthier or indeed as a smoking cessation method. There are legal battles being waged across the world as the fight continues to bring these devices to a larger audience. In the United States, laws and rulings regarding electronic cigarettes, quite literally varies from state to state and some states have banned their promotion altogether!
The conflict rages on many different levels too, from those who would seek to ban the product completely, to those that perhaps accept the e cig is coming but want it to be restricted and regulated either as a tobacco product or as a medicinal product.
As with most products that are successful upon entering the marketplace, the electronic cigarette is not a standalone item. In fact, there are a whole host of accessories to accompany them, such as different flavoured liquid nicotine, different models of e cigarette with varying functions and things like carry cases to pack all the goods into. It's fair to say that the e cigarette, within its communities at least has probably achieved gadget" status!
Although distributors are trying to bring the device to a wider audience and to be visible in public places and stores, generally, for the moment, the electric cigarette is mostly available through companies operating on the internet, and there are many of them, yet another showcase of their current demand.
There appears to be a long and probably very winding road (in view of all the opposition) before electronic cigarettes could achieve mass market appeal but if you have any interest in the subject, you are going to hear a lot more about them yet!
