When the smoking ban kicked in a few years ago, smokers initially feared they would be isolated, especially when it came to lighting up in their favourite bars and pubs. Fortunately for them and the businesses in question, landlords, landladies and proprietors did their level best to create/build smoking designated areas within the grounds of their establishments.
Of course, this turned out to be only a partial solution as these smoking areas were and are still not permitted within the buildings themselves. So, all well and good in the peak of summer and on gloriously warm and sunny days but as soon as autumn fades in, things all become rather bleak, wet and chilly! Although the cheers and celebrations of non smokers can be heard for miles around!
Enter stage left, with a cocky, confident swagger and wearing a superhero cape, Mr electronic cigarette! In many places and with a bit of nimble footwork, the e-cig successfully manages to side step the smoking ban. How? Well, it doesn't release any smoke or contain any tobacco, just an aqueous-based vapour seen on exhalation.
With no second hand or passive smoke to worry about, and barely any odour left on the body or clothes, the e-cigarette even manages to give a welcoming handshake to all the non-smokers.
Whilst in the pub, "vaping" on your new e-cig, you may well get the thousand question routine from those around you who are wondering how you got around the smoking ban!
One of those questions may well be, "What about the nicotine?!" So an e-cig may not contain tobacco, and it may not produce smoke, but mostly it does provide the user with a familiar hit of nicotine; although cartridges are available that contain no nicotine in them at all.
It appears that this device kicking up a media storm (more and more Hollywood celebrities are apparently making the decision to try e-cigarettes) also offers its users some versatility and choice. The cartridges mentioned above are usually available in a variety of strengths and also flavours. (Although the flavours available are attracting a lot of negative press, for fears they are aimed at those below the legal age to smoke)
So, next time you see someone smoking in (actually indoors) your local bar, it probably means that news of the electronic cigarette has reached your neighbourhood.
