subject: Welding And Its Different Types [print this page]

Welding is an important process during the process of fabrication and different types of welding are used based upon the need and the material to be fabricated. Different methods of welding are

(a)Stick (b) TIG (c) MIG (d) FCAW

(a) STICK welding stands for Shielded Metal Arc Welding and this procedure uses a rod and hence its name. During this procedure an arc is produced by using the power source at constant ampere. A rod or electrode made out of metal is used by aluminum welder during the process and the rod is flux coated to protect the area to be welded from air during the process of welding. It is one of the cheapest methods of welding and it can be used to weld almost any materials. Thick materials can be welded easily and this method of welding is mostly used in construction and industrial purposes. It is one of the basic forms of welding used in different field.

(b)TIG Welding

TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas but its regular name is Gas Tungsten Arc welding and this type of welding is used since olden times. GTAW joining technology is employed in the fixing process of two metals. It also needs a regular power supply same as that of stick welding. But in this process an aluminum welder uses a filler to fix the joint. An arc is produced with the help of a tungsten piece and the torch is also equipped with a shield gas flow that protects the welding area from air during the welding process. Temperature can be reached more than 10,000 degrees using the tungsten material. During the welding process an arc is produced and a filler metal is deposited into the joint during the process. Filler metals come in the form of wire and they are added to joint during the welding process. Argon gas is used as a shielding material in more than 90% of the metals. High quality welds can be achieved by using this method of welding. It is used to weld exotic materials and other high quality materials.

(c) MIG Welding

MIG stands for Metal Inert Gas and is regularly called as Gas Metal Arc Welding. Inert or noble gases are used for shielding purpose and the gas is chosen based upon the need and requirement. Any joint is welded by using a wire feed which is used feeds the solid filler. Constant power supply is needed to create arc and melt the wire.

And there are many more different types of welding and each and everyone can be used based upon the need and requirement.
