Here's Some No Nonsense Tips To Counter Colitis Symptoms

Whilst an ever increasing number of people are being diagnosed with and suffering from colitis symptoms, it is often the case that they are not provided with the real, unequivocal plain speaking advice that tells it as it is. Valuable time can be lost and incorrect actions taken that prolong or even induce symptoms which can be avoided if better understanding of the disease is attained. It is often the case that when colitis is first experienced the sufferer will try and seek a quick solution for alleviating the symptoms. Yet the characteristics of the disease are not like that. Unfortunately, colitis does not have simple black and white answers. Every sufferer has to find what works for them individually, plus, in addition to this they must follow the major guidelines. What is a reasonable period of time to understand and determine the individual sufferer's own disease characteristics where they can make a plausible judgment of what their future health holds? It is reasonable to suggest three to four years. This gives enough time to utilise measures for colitis management during periods of both remission and relapse. Such measures must include adopting periods of complete rest when symptoms appear. Complete rest means just that. It is all about not going to work, no social life, no undertaking normal family life. Rest in bed with lots of sleep, then rest on the sofa. Ensure all jobs and tasks are undertaken by someone else. Ensure that there is no physical or mental stress placed upon the body. Stay indoors for weeks. Very boring and painful but it does bring lasting results. This action should be undertaken as soon as symptoms appear and continued until they disappear. If this takes six weeks then it takes six weeks. Once the symptoms stop, then it's a very gradual reintroduction to daily life over the following two months to coincide with the winding down of the steroid medication. If complete rest is not achieved, the bowel and medication are not being given the chance to fight against the inflammation to ensure that it is reduced in its entirety. What will happen is that the symptoms will keep reappearing after a false period of better health. You will be going round in circles with symptoms then feeling a little better, dive back into life and the symptoms reappear. You will not attain good health again irrespective of the amount of steroids that you take. Stress will then be a factor which, surprise, surprise will bring on symptoms. Put simply, you must make every effort to stop "feeding" the disease. Counter it with lots of rest, eliminate the stress that you place upon yourself both physically and mentally and respect the disease that you have been diagnosed with.Surgery is complicated, difficult and irreversible. You should never contemplate it unless it is a medical necessity (perforation of the bowel or major uncontrolled bleeding over a period of time) or the quality of life is so difficult over an extended period of time that there is no chance of even attaining a modicum of normality. Tests such as a colonoscopy and scans will show the extent of the inflammation. When dealing with this disease, the care management cannot be left solely to a doctor or hospital consultant. The sufferer must take a degree of responsibility to ensure that they manage periods of remission and relapse as effectively as possible in order to reduce the effect colitis symptoms have on their life. By doing so, they will increase their knowledge and understanding of their own body's reaction to colitis and, in fact, become more knowledgeable about the impact the disease has on them personally than a doctor could ever possibly be.
