So you want to learn how to play piano but is put off by the expensive one-on-one tuition fees and the years of learning under a teacher. One way to get around this is to find piano lessons CDs or DVDs which are available in the internet so that you can learn how to play the piano from home. Another method, which is much preferred is to learn how to play by ear. This is because once you have aquired this skill, you can virtually play any songs on the piano by just listening to the song.

Can anyone learn to play by ear? Well, what I can say is most people have this skill in them and many do not even know they have it. To start doing this, you must have confident and know that you can do it. Many people just convinced themselves that they do not have the talent to play by ear and never got started just because of this negative belief.

So if you want to learn how to play the piano by ear, start off by buying some books on basic chords and scales and master them. Then begin immersing yourself in music, especially the genre that you like and start experiment with it on the piano.

Even if you get it wrong, keep trying. Keep on playing the melody and then experiment with the chords, paying attention to it, that things will soon start to stick out. Slowly you will find certain chords will become familiar and certain melodies to go along with those chords. Soon you will also find out that in certain music, there are fixed chords progressions that you simply can't go wrong.

Do you know why many people who learn how to play piano the traditional way can't play by ear? This is because they are trained to play according to written music and they are not allowed to stray from what is written. So they do not have the chance to experiment with their own creativity.

As for you, your fingers are not tied and thus you are free to try various forms and playing styles and because of this freedom of creativity, your brain will be more receptive and will be able to pick up sounds, tone, chord structures and melodic progressions much easier.

As discussed earlier, in order to learn to play the piano by ear, you will need to have at least some knowledge about chords and chord progressions. When you choose a song to experiment with, make sure it is a song that you like and the song should not have too many chord changes or too difficult to play so that you will not give up when mistakes are made. If you find that the song is too difficult, then it is paramount that you choose another easier song.

Then be patient for it will take a while to perfect the song. But once you have done it, your confidence will soar and then you can pick another song and start doing it all over again. In time to come, as your repertoire builds up, your playing skill will also improve and soon, you will be able to play almost any song by ear. Isn't that nice?
