subject: Flooring Care Tips [print this page]

Most people know that a dirty floor is not only dangerous but that it is unattractive. Not all types of flooring are easy to maintain. Yet, one thing is for certain. If you hope to avoid regular flooring installation of new product, you need to keep up on the flooring repair. If you maintain the flooring you have, it will last considerably longer.

The following tips will help you to keep floors looking great no matter what type they are.

- Use floor mats by doors or other "dirty regions." For example, to avoid dirt being tracked in from the outdoors, place a mat by the doors. Do the same in the kitchen and bathroom near the water sources and cooking spaces. These areas are the ones that need the most attention.

- Keep up on regularly cleansing. This may mean sweeping, mopping or even scrubbing the floor, depending on the type and the need of the flooring. Carpets should receive professional cleaning at least one time every six months, more if they are high traffic areas. Seal any natural stones as the manufacturer requires. Keep hardwoods polished to keep them clean.

- Handle any flooring repair quickly. For example, if your hardwood floors are buckling or warping, it is critical that you repair this before they begin to deteriorate or break. If the carpeting gets significantly wet, get it professionally cleaned to pull out any potential moisture build up that could lead to mold growth.

Flooring installation is necessary whenever the flooring has gotten beyond repair. Yet, it should not occur too often. Most of the time, if you keep up with regular maintenance and tackle flooring repair quickly; you can avoid needing to install new flooring too often.
