Part of the reason why the Jacksonville Jaguars are having success this year is due to their star running back Maurice Jones Drew. He has been their main attraction on offense and has come up with big plays when they needed them. The way to hold the fort this weekend revolves around getting hold of Maurice Jones-Drew, the centerpiece of everything the Jaguars do on offense. He's fourth in the NFL in rushing with 878 yards and, although David Garrard (17 touchdown passes, 10 interceptions) is having a solid season, the Jaguars, like the Giants, are depleted a bit at receiver and need to run the ball to keep the Giants' defense honest.
Jones-Drew, who was limited yesterday in practice with an abdomen issue, is on a tear, rushing for 100-plus yards in three consecutive games, something he never previously accomplished in his NFL career. The Jaguars also are on a tear, riding a three-game winning streak, yet Jones-Drew downplayed their success. I would not really call it hot he said. Obviously last week our defense played very well and our offense played horrible.
Is Jones-Drew being too harsh? Not really. The Jaguars somehow managed to get past the Browns 24-20 despite an incredibly bad offensive meltdown. Jacksonville turned the ball over on five consecutive second-half possessions and trailed 20-17 in the closing minutes, but rallied with an 87-yard touchdown drive. Jones-Drew accounted for 76 of the yards himself and got the winning points on a 1-yard scoring plunge.
