Are You A Pig?
Are You A Pig?

Every year my wife and I always sit down with our financial planner and make sure that we are still on track to reach our financial goals. Yes I do have a financial planner. One of the most important things I have learned is that you need to make sure you surround yourself with the best and brightest coaches you can find. But that's a whole other blog. Anyway, my wife and I were sitting there with our financial planner discussing our retirement plans etc. and really trying to come off as respectable people when I looked out the window and saw one of my wife's pigs standing on our deck drinking out of our hot tub!

My wife saw the pig the same time I did and I saw thispanickedlook in her eyes. I mean it's tough to be respectable when you have a pig drinking out of your hot tub. You see, my wife loves animals and one week I returned home from a business trip to find my wife had adopted two baby pigs. Now pigs are pretty cute especially when they are young, but the problem is they all grow up. So now we have two monster pigs both around 200 pounds. They really are pets and my kids and wife love them but they are to the point now that if they want out of the pen they just put their noses under the bottom rung, lift up and they're free.

The funny thing is we have noticed that even though the pigs realize they can get out whenever they want; as long as they have food and water they stay right where they are. Well apparently on the day in question my wife had not given them any food that morning so by 4 o'clock they just up and lifted their pen.

It made me think, "how many times are we like those pigs? How many times do you sit complacently by just accepting life the way it is?" Too many people live their lives, happily floating along until something happens to them to make them take a different course. Unfortunately, most people only react when there is something negative that happens in their lives.

Right now in our economy we are seeing and hearing more and more stories of people who wish they would have been more prepared, who promise that this will never happen to them again, who promise they are getting out of debt and staying there. Unfortunately, most people are like those pigs and as soon as everything is smooth they are happy staying in their enclosure. Our challenge to you is to always push your boundaries, never become complacent, get the most out of life that you can, and finally: Don't be a pig!
