And for good reason - pirates offer the attractive allure of risk, threat, and excitement on the high seas! Control your own ship, invade business ships with cannons booming, overpower armed forces galleons (just to be brazen), and plunder gold and goods. As well as doing all this among the backdrop of hot exotic skies, blue ocean, white sandy shorelines and hidden treasure. Honestly, who does not dream the life of a pirate? The Hollywood edition, of course!
Pirates currently have experienced a wonderful renaissance within the last few few years, and costume producers have jumped to the request with artistic, sophisticated and sexy outfits. From genuine Jack Sparrow outfits to delicate female captains and lusty tavern wenches, you will be certain to get yourself for a thrilling life on a thieved boat, if only for one night. So, what range can be found in the marketplace? Pretty much whatever you can think of! Here are a couple suggestions to get you started:
Buccaneer: In the past, buccaneers are nearer to the present day enchanting fantasy of a pirate: the English crown paid escaped slaves, rebels, mercenaries and rogues as qualified privateers to fight against England's changing adversaries, from the Spanish to the French to the Dutch. Attacking boats and plundering villages, buccaneers lived a completely independent and in many cases democratic life, voting for formidable boat captains and dividing the spoils. Many ran pirate bases and some retired as well-to-do business owners. Henry Morgan is probably the most well-known, who grew to become a wealthy plantation operator, was knighted in England, and also grew to become deputy governor of Jamaica!
As a buccaneer, a good look is a puffy white or black shirt, overcoat, sash, dark boots, a blade and an eye patch.
A superb pirate costume. Buccaneers had their own type of sword, the boucan, a long blade with a curved end, initially put to use in hunting.
Captain Jack Sparrow: Your outfit will include a white "puffy shirt", a vest, sash and belts, and boot covers. Dress in loose blue trousers and brown leather boots. Add a dark overcoat, buy a (plastic) cutlass and scabbard, and a pirate hat with attached handmade braids. Grow a mustache and goatee you can braid, and finish your costume with cosmetics and mascara. Why struggle when you can negotiate?
Elizabeth Swann: A superbly normal aristocrat, until pirates took her away! Look for a streaming white dress costume with gold embelleshment and petticoat. Put in a red admiral's jacket and hide a dagger to demonstrate that you're no ordinary damsel in distress.
