Of Nature and Man
Of Nature and Man

Every Sunday evening, weather permitting, I take a walk to nature. I use this time to clear my head, put last week behind me and mentally prepare for next week. I also use this time to appreciate the nature of this great world in which I live.

About 15 minutes into my walk I cross the invisible line where the sounds of nature exceed the sounds of man. This is a great destination and helps keep my perspective balanced. I typically continue another 15 minutes into nature and take a break to ponder.

This week, instead of thinking about the destination, I paid attention to the journey. Along the path I recognized the amazing things man has accomplished with nature in their own yards and homes. Beautiful homes incorporating rocks, wood, stone, and other items of beauty from nature. Beautiful yards and gardens. It is almost like assembling the best of the best from nature and organizing your own snapshot of nature in your yard. It brought to mind a passage from 1 Samuel in the Old Testament that says if you honor God, He will honor you. As man appreciates or honors the creations of nature, God honors man by surrounding him with this living beauty.

Sometimes in our attempts to organize nature and surround us with beauty and practical things, such as electricity and transportation, we make mistakes or our organizational attempts are no longer practical. Change is required. Who Moved My Cheese is an incredible book explaining how, when one resourcewhere I find my cheeseno longer works, instead of quitting, I need to find another resourceanother source for my cheese. It is time to find another way to power our vehicles. It is time to find ways to enable our electricity to do more with less and find new environmentally friendly sources. Let us show honor and honor will be returned to us. Let us make those necessary changes to better manage our resources.
