In light of demand experienced for electric vehicles Ford has committed to introduce five full-electric and hybrid models in Europe by 2013, this is part of Ford's global "electrification" strategy. Models include the Transit Connect Electric in 2011, the next generation Ford Focus Electric in 2012, followed by hybrid and plug-in hybrid derivatives of the all-new C-MAX and another hybrid-electric model in 2013.
Ford showed off two of its light commercial vans at the RAC Future Car Challenge which is a new initiative to showcase electric, hybrid and low emission vehicles. The RAC challenge rewards competitors that use the least energy on a 60 mile route from Madeira Drive, Brighton to Regent Street, London.
The Ford Transit Connect Electric and Fiesta Van ECOnetic took part in the challenge; the Ford Focus ECOnetic also took part. The Ford Transit Connect Electric is a zero-emission, full electric-powered version of the award-winning Transit Connect light commercial vehicle, this particular vehicle was a plug in electric.
The Transit Connect Electric features a state-of-the-art lithium ion battery pack which has a capacity of 28kWh and a chassis-mounted 55kW electric traction induction motor. This gives it a range of up to 80 miles and has a top speed of 75mph.
The Transit Connect Electric's lithium-ion battery pack can be charged via a standard power outlet the onboard converter then charges the battery pack. The battery pack can be fully charged in 10 hours using a household 230 volt supply.
The electric Transit Connect is due to arrive in Europe in 2011, expect to see a surge of used vans in Sussex as people flock to trade in their old vans for new electric ones.
