Unless you have been living on mars, then you have undoubtedly seen the hype surrounding Apples famous iPad over the past six months.
The esteemed manufacturer has now taken some of the technology from this unit and incorporated it into their latest mobile handset, the iPhone 4, with stunning results. Moving away from the Samsung built ARM Cortex A8 chip that was used in the hugely successful 3GS, Apple have fitted the iPhone 4 with their custom built A4 chip, the same processor as is used in the iPad. As you can well imagine, the phone zips in and out of applications at an incredible rate, and multi task facilities are handled with ease. Although Apple hasn't actually released the exact specification of the chip, one can only imagine that it will be hovering somewhere just below the 1Ghz mark. The iPhone 4 software has been suitably upgraded to incorporate new features to go with its new body. IOS4 offers users the chance to sub categorise various application, so rather than trawling through homescreens to find your option, similar icons can be placed in one customisable folder, thus making them easier to find. The static black background found on the homescreens can now be changed to various different backgrounds, giving the trusted layout a vibrant new look. Other new features offered are a 5x zoom feature on the camera, unified inbox for e mails the option to categorise your photographs by where they were taken rather than by simply scrolling through them by date order.
It is not only the internal organs of the iPhone 4 that have been updated, but the body has had plenty of cosmetic work done as well. Gone are the tried and trusted curved back from previous models, the volume rocker switch and other familiar options. The new body comprises of two gorgeous looking sheets of chemically treated glass. This glass has been extensively tested by apple and is very durable and scratch resistant. The fact it is so good is illustrated by the fact that despite it was designed for the screen, Apple have chosen to use it on the back of the phone as well, not only keeping it looking great but also making the high end looking phone super resistant to damage. Between these two sheets of glass you will find an expensive looking stainless steel band, incorporating a few buttons including the new plus and minus volume rather than a single rocker. A front facing camera has been added, with an optimised focal length for taking photos at arms length, great for self portraits or making the "Face Time" calls, Apples take on the video call. Which ever way you look at it, the iPhone 4 is not only improvement on the 3GS, but also steals a march on the whole mobile phone industry with an unrivalled display, gorgeous looks and a feature list that will please everybody, apart from those requiring a Qwerty keypad.
