Simple DIY tips for carpet repair

The need to repair our carpets is a task that most of us have come across at some time or the other. Most times, we end up calling the specialists in. But, the fact is that many of these little repairs can be done yourself. Considering that carpets are often in the living area, the amount of traffic on them is constant, especially when there are children in the house. Wear and tear, spills, spots and stains are but natural. Here is how you can deal with them. There are a few basic tools that each of these tasks requires and if you have them handy, you shouldn't have much of a problem at all.

With curious children in the house, a few burns in the carpet are but natural. Depending on how big these burns are you can treat them yourself or call in the experts. You can start by making a mix of vinegar and carb soda. Leave this solution on for a while on the small burn and this can lighten the resultant stain. Another tip which works, especially if you have a section of the carpet tucked away under a sofa or table, is to cut out a piece of the same size and fix it in place. Use an extremely sharp knife to get smooth edges. Small cigarette stains you can treat by lightly trimming the top portion of the fibers that are burnt. Then use a bristled brush to brush over the stain to cover up.

Another common repair requirement is color fading. This largely happens if your carpet is exposed to a lot of heat or has overused. You have two ways to go here. First you could dye the carpet and second you could just junk it and buy yourself another one. Dying a carpet definitely requires the services of a professional. Don't hesitate to spend a little more on this if you think its worth it. Cheaper places may end up doing a shoddy job and you may end up a with a carpet that will fade away soon enough. Make enquiries on the places to go to and remember to also do your best to maintain your carpets.
