For some of us, we don't mind wearing whatever kind of clothing we want when we are behind the wheel of our cars. However, for others, it is a hassle to be stuck inside of a car for long periods of time wearing jeans and a top that is too constricting.
If you are planning a long drive, it is just as important to plan out what you are going to wear the day that you actually plan to travel. For example, whenever I drive up to New York, I usually opt to throw on an old pair of jeans that are really worn in (thus flexible and not as constricting) and a loose fitting t-shirt. Alternatively, I will put on a pair of tasteful black stretch pants that are loose fitting and go well with any type of top. After all, you don't want to look like a total slob when you are out and about.
It is important to remember that when you are driving on the road for long periods of time (I.e. trips that are longer than four hours or so) that you take frequent rest breaks. Even if you do not feel tired or are anxious to get to wherever it is you are going, it is still a good idea to get out of your vehicle, get some fresh air and stretch a little bit. Doing so will keep you alert and much more prepared to react should something go wrong while driving. Also, not that it would necessarily happen, but you want to wear comfortable clothes just in case your vehicle has mechanical problems and breaks down. For the ladies, it is especially annoying to have a flat tire while driving and have to change it in your business clothes or in a dress.
If you want to look appropriate for a function or if you are driving long distance to go directly to a function and you want to look a certain way upon your arrival, it is still recommended that you dress comfortably while driving. For example, you might throw on a pair of sweatpants or a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. Then, as you get closer to the function that you are supposed to attend, find a place to stop that has a clean restroom, and bring your items with you to change quickly. In that sort of scenarios, it may be helpful and wise to put on your makeup prior to your departure.
