Leader, is the one chosen to propel the direction of an organization. An excellent leader must be the one who proves to be worthy of the responsibility and lead his team to victory. This also applicable to those who are going to start a business whereby you will be the leader who define the vision and lead your employee, until the day you employ a manager to run the system.
An effective leader is someone who finds solutions to execute complex and multifunctional tasks, within the given time and budget, but without the pretension of wanting to do everything himself. The ability to plan, coordinate, and execute task requires, among the other things, the capacity to lead and positively influence collaborators, guiding and motivating them to give their very best to reach a common objective. That's why, whenever you are selected to be a leader to lead a task, remember to:
1. Clearly define the scope of the task from the very beginning. Transform the task's objectives and needs into concrete parameters for implementation. This is the best way to avoid having the task get out of control.
2. Define realistic deadlines to remain within the time line. Execute this task together with all team members involved in the task. The key word is realistic. Your team will refuse to buy into the idea if it does not believe the deadline is feasible.
3. Break the task down into smaller and more manageable goals. This will make the work less intimidating for team members, and it will help to conclude certain tasks within the established deadlines.
4. Delegate tasks based on team member competencies. Know the individual attributes of each team member and delegate tasks according to these attributes. Monitor the work to ensure the tasks are being performed as anticipated.
5. Estimate the impact that costs will have on the task. The leader must estimate all inherent costs for the project beforehand to be able to employ the available resources in a rational manner.
6. Show enthusiasm toward the task. A leader's enthusiasm inspires the others, helping to keep the team motivated and involved. Even if something does not work out as planned, demonstrate confidence to avoid discouraging the team. Positive attitudes will help the group overcome mishaps. For sure if you want to success, you must do what you are passion about!
7. Instill and value team spirit. The members of your team should feel proud of being part of the group. IF they are not enthused with past achievements and motivated concerning new objectives, their commitment will not be complete. This could create problem for you, making it more difficult to reach the team's objective.
8. Anticipate possible obstacles. Every task has its problems. Develop and give priority to contingency plans and know what the alternatives are to implement them when necessary. This will reduce the need for drastic measures and ensure the successful conclusion of your tasks.
9. Plan changes. During the execution of a task, changes may prove necessary. Always have an alternative ready that will help you to rapidly adjust the direction of your projects.
10. Keep a global vision. Instead of concentrating on the details of the tasks that should be executed, concentrate on he final objective. This way, you will be less vulnerable if a specific problem occurs along the way. Maintain a clear vision and prepare your task for the difficult moments.
11. Do not lose your task's "pulse". As leader, you have the obligation to monitor the progress of your team with regard to the tasks being carried out, as well as the application of resources. Do not reduce your participation. Your permanent involvement will help keep the task on track.
If you are just appointed to be a manager, or just set up a company and looking for a manager to run the system, try to apply it and follow the criteria for manager selection. I'm sure the outcome will be excellent.
