Indian Power System
Indian Power System

Indian power system is a widely distributed network of generators with total generating capacity of more than 108,000 MW, and transmission lines of about 200,000 circuit kilometers. The generating capacity is a mix of thermal generation, hydro generation and nuclear generation. Wind power and diesel power generations also exist, but they generally caters local load. The transmission circuits comprise AC systems of 765KV, 400KV, 220KV, 132KV and 500 KV systems of Bipolar HVDC

Electricity, being on concurrent list of Indian constitution, is controlled by both states as well as central government. Within states, the control is exercisedthrough a state owned utility known as State Electricity Board (SEB). Each state's power system is managed by a individual SEB. These SEBs have been grouped in region power systems forming the five separate regional grids - NR (Northern Region), WR(Western region), SR(Southern Region), ER(Eastern Region) and NER (North Eastern Region). HVDC back-to-back systems and AC lines, facilitating inter-regional transfer of the power, interconnect these regional grids. Apart from State Electricity Boards, Government of India has also incorporated generation and transmission companies at central level. These companies owned and manage power recourses on all India level. Central Transmission Company is act as system controller and is responsible for operation of all regional grids.

Each regional grid is managed by a separate control center called Regional Load Dispatch Center (RLDC) and each state power system is controlled by a State Load Dispatch center (SLDC). Power system under the purview of a SLDC has also been divided into Sub-Load Dispatch Centers (Sub-LDCs) as separate manageable entities. National Load Dispatch Center (NLDC) manages the activities of all RLDCs. NLDC, RLDCs, SLDCs and Sub-LDCs have their own SCADA/EMS systems, integrated in a hierarchical structure. RLDC being at the top of hierarchy at regional level, coordinates the day-to-day operation of regional power system through SLDCs.
