A look onBuddhist meditation techniques.

Once you decide to meditate, you must select the positions and techniques that are best for you. No one can dictate your personal style of Buddhist meditation; this is something you must determine yourself, experimenting with different styles and positions until you find the ones ideal for you.

Before you begin this inner exploration, it's important to take a few basic steps that will prepare you for your meditative journey. Dress yourself in comfortable clothes, eat a satisfying meal that does not tire or overstuff you, and make sure that you approach your first meditative session well-rested and with no distractions to cloud your mind and conscience.

Although this is a practice that can be performed while standing, walking, lying down, etc., most people choose to sit while they meditate. More importantly, they sit in a certain predetermined position that is right and comfortable for them. After all, you will have to hold this position, and in a completely motionless state, for extended periods of time. You must choose a position that is easy, flexible, and devoid of pain.

The meditative techniques and positions that you choose will depend upon various factors, including your age, your physical condition, your lifestyle, etc.

Among the most popular, time-honored positions are the classic lotus or half-lotus, both of which involve the specific placement of one's limbs; and, more importantly, the proper placement of one's mind.

And when selecting a meditative position, you must consider the correct positioning for each limb, including your legs, your chest, your abdomen, your buttocks, and your hands.

Only you can determine the meditative positions and techniques that are right for you; that will produce a needed sense of ease, silence and tranquility.
