subject: Secrets For Bass Fishing In Cold Water [print this page]

Many who love to fish for bass know that the lakes are typically full during the summer time when the fish are more active. This can make it difficult to find a quiet spot to fish. There are people on jet skis and speed boats along with a deal of other fishermen.

Fishing in the cold weather will allow you to have some time away from the hustle and bustle of the summer months.

Even though the fish are more active when the water is warm, these three secrets for bass fishing in cold water will allow you to have a great day of fishing when the weather is cold.

1. Do not fish for a lot of barely legal fish. You really want to go with the largest fish. You will have more luck if you try for one large fish rather than trying to find a school of small fish. The fish will be sluggish in the colder water so hooking one large fish will be much more satisfying than reeling a bunch of babies.

Your day on the cold lake battling the elements will be well worth when you bring in a one or two really go sized bass. While you still may land a smaller bass or two, you will be more than likely to hook a large one when the waters are cold.

2. You will want to stick to the deep lake fishing when you are fishing in cold waters. This will be the best place to find the really big bass that are just waiting for you to reel in. As stated previously, the larger bass is what you will be angling for in the cold weather.

The shores will not be as prolific as the deeper water will be. This is because the vegetation will not offer as much food supply as the deeper waters will. The bass will be congregating in these areas in large schools. They will not be as active as they are in the summer months so you will need to find a way to stimulate them into taking your bait.

The good thing is that they will still need to eat. The just may not be as actively feeding in the colder months as they will be in the warmer ones. One of the highest touted lures to use in cold and deep water is the spinner-bait. This bait will draw the attention of the bass and you will be able to entice them to take this bait.

Make sure that you are using a spinner that has plenty of weight to it so that it will make it the bottom of the area you are fishing. You also want to use the slow return for bringing the bait back into the boat. This will allow the bait to catch the eye of the bass and create enough interest for them to attack it.
