Authorities imposes curbs to foil protests, Eidgah march

Srinagar: Authorities on Friday decided to impose curfew in some parts of Srinagar in put a clampdown on proposed march to martyr's graveyard, Eidgah called by Syed Ali Shah Geelani led Hurriyat Conference.
The decision to impose curfew was also taken in view of heckling of chairman of his faction, Hurriyat (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq by some right wing parties' activists in Chandigarh during a seminar as authorities felt incident might trigger protests in Mirwaiz stronghold areas.
"Curfew was imposed in areas under the jurisdiction of five police stations, Nowhatta, M R Gunj, Rainawari, Khanyar and Safa Kadal to prevent any violence," a police officer said here.
Geelani, whose faction spearheads five month long Quit Kashmir' campaign, had called people to march toward martyrs' graveyard, Eidgah after Friday's congregational and to bring along bricks to build a resistance wall' in memory of those killed during last twenty years of freedom struggle'.
Authorities also put octogenarian leader under house at his Hyderpora residence.
The restrictions prevented people from offering Friday congregational prayers in Jamia Masjid and other major mosques and shrines in the areas under curfew.
Meanwhile, life remained unaffected in non-curfewed areas of Kashmir as schools and government offices remained open and transport-private and public-plied on the roads smoothly.
Kashmir is showing signs of coming back to normalcy from last fifteen days or so with Hurriyat (G) also relaxing its protest-cum-strike calendar.
Kashmir has witnessed one of its high voltage summers ever since killing of a teenager, Tufail Ahmad Matto on June 11 this year after allegedly hit by a police tear gas shell.
Tufail's killing led to valley wide protests and shutdowns spearheaded by Syed Ali Shah Geelani led Hurriyat (G) by coming up with its "Quit Kashmir' campaign as Authorities, on its part, came down hardly on protesters by imposing curfews during major part of this period. The events have led to the 111 civilian killings thus far allegedly by police and paramilitary forces.
Meanwhile, Geelani has registered his strong resentment against the restriction imposed by the government to foil the proposed building of a resistance wall' at Eidgah.
In a statement to Agence India Press, he said, "Resistance walls in memory of Martyrs will be erected at any cost and at all places."
Geelani also unveiled yet another protest-cum-strike calendar asking people to observe complete shutdown on 4th next month against continuous detention of political prisoners.
He urged students to protest peacefully for one hour on November, 30 in the afternoon against the unabated' human rights violation in Kashmir.
According to the fresh calendar, people have been asked to go for one hour long protests against the arrest of youth by the police. (AIP)
