subject: The Secret To Eliminating Low Self-esteem: It Is Even Better Than Counseling! [print this page]

Are you feeling inadequate these days? Does low self-confidence and poor self-esteem keep you from believing in yourself and going after what you want?

Some people feel so inadequate that they feel that others always feel, perform or look better than they do. This syndrome can ruin your quality of life, as it has done to many others.

Enhancing your self-confidence is an exciting goal to pursue because, when achieved, you will feel more optimistic about every important aspect of your life and yourself as a person. The magical key to unlocking your self-confidence is as effective as it is deceptively simple.

It is better than counseling because not all counselors include this little-understood but powerful key in their counseling interventions. The secret is cognitive and thought modification: Streamlining your thinking processes- that is, the way you think about yourself?

After all, what is self-esteem? It is confidence derived from high quality and optimistic thinking patterns about the kind of person you are and the quality of what you do. You may find it hard to value yourself and appreciate and honor who you are.

If so, you probably compare yourself to others, constantly, concluding that you come up short. You may expect to fail at whatever you attempt, producing a debilitating lack of confidence that prevents you from pursuing those things that you truly want.

Does this sound like you? Pessimistic thinking about who you are, can seriously compromise your likelihood of living up to your real potential.

For example, if you are dissatisfied with your job, it may reflect the fact that, subconsciously, you don't believe that you can move up the ladder. To climb that ladder, of course, you have to work hard.

However, if burdened by poor self-esteem, you are unlikely to work hard because you won't have sufficient confidence to believe that doing so will actually pay off for you. Therefore, you are likely to just refrain from pursuing anything better.

To pursue a career change, you need the confidence that your skills and abilities will justify it. In this way, having a potent and confident self-image is a precursor to achieving that which you desire.

Poor self-esteem influences you to settle, even when you can actually achieve more. All sorts of dreams and goals are unknowingly compromised and you end-up shortchanged.

If you have poor self-esteem, you may also be attracted to abusive types because you may not feel you deserve more. Or, you may latch on to the first person who becomes available.

A negative self-image subconsciously causes you to shortchange yourself, thus depriving you of a sense of well-being, rewarding relationships and even financial security. To alleviate this, don't brood over your deficiencies and celebrate your strengths.

The enhancement of realistic perspective, the celebration of your strengths and the cessation of brooding facilitates your development of healthy levels of self-esteem. Once accomplished, you will be able to appreciate others positive characteristics and harbor no feelings of jealousy or ill will.

Do you know that you have important strengths and that you have the ongoing potential to continue improving yourself? If so, that is suggestive of a healthy self-esteem. If your self-esteem is not at healthy levels, however, experiment with the following ways to improve it:

Write down your assets: You, just like everyone else, have certain competencies, areas of expertise and experiences that are strengths. Do an exhaustive inventory of your strengths, reflect and then appreciate and honor what you see.

Do you feel bad about your appearance? If so, make some changes. For example, you might get a makeover!

Update your wardrobe. Wear clothes and get a hairstyle that highlights your physical strengths.

Most Important: Don't compare yourself in any way to others. Commonsense: There will always be someone with better qualities and those with worse.

However, in the day-to-day routine of life it is of no concern. Be yourself; be authentic; be who you are! After all, you really are you and not them.

Quietly honor yourself and treat yourself with care: You deserve the same respect that you give to others. After all, the better you feel about who you are and where you are going, the more you will be able to contribute to the community around you.

A healthy level of self-esteem provides the enthusiasm and energy for you to get real enjoyment out of life and work hard. Concentrate on working hard to continue evolving into an improved form of you.

By doing so, you will contribute significantly to yourself, your family and the others around you. Maintaining a healthy level of self-esteem is your responsibility to yourself and results in a precious contribution to your community.
