Morale is the elusive thing. It is very difficult to define or explain in appropriate manner. But it always exercises a potent influence on the human relations climate. Morale is widely used term. It generally states the status, attitude of mind or mentality towards the work, job, and responsibility towards the job allotted him in an organization. It is a mental condition or attitude of individual and of group which determines their willingness to co-operate. It is an attitude of mind. It also affects outputs, the quality of products, cost, co-operation, discipline and other elements of success. It affects the employee's or a group's willingness to work and co-operate in the best interest of the individual or group and the organization for which they works.
The morale may be either individual or group one. It is s the inseparable part of any organization. In any organization the morel always affect the productivity, which is the relationship between rate of input and outputs. There are four kinds of relationship between morale and productivity.
High morale high productivity: This situation likely to occur when group goals are achieved and satisfied, where individual goals including freedom of work, good wage returns, job interest are satisfied which always leads to motivation of the employees so as to accomplish high standard of performance.
Low productivity high morale: this occurs where individual and group fails to achieve the common goals even they are more able to complete the work, job, task. And the productivity comes down because of only non getting response on the part of supervisor as well as management level. The other factors like skill enhancing programme, lack of training & development Programme also are responsible for this type of situation.
High Productivity Low Morale: Under this situation the role of supervisor is belongs to only increase the productivity through only imposing the penalty. But it is important that this situation impact may not be remain for the long period of time in an organization.
Low Morale Low Productivity : This is the situation where factors obtained in combination of high morale high productivity is lacking.
Now question is that how to measure and control the morale of all the employees in an organization? The answer for this question is 1. Observation by the executives, managers or experts where they can study the response for the given task, the movement in department, the body language, the facial expression, tone of voice etc. 2. The feedback through questionnaire method and interview method which reflects the response towards work, attitude, state of mind, response towards the training and development, performance review, organizational behavior etc. Of course, the data collected through the observation and the data collected through the questionnaire and interview method should be kept in safe, confidential manner, which is the most important asset for the organization. These references can help them for the future reference or future course of action.
