I know you're probably sick of gay Peruvian ghost stories by now, seeing that they've completely overtaken modern cinema, but see if you can find room in your heart for one more. Peru's official Academy Award submission is Undertow, the acclaimed tale of troubled young fisherman Miguel. Miguel lives in a small, traditional town on the gorgeous Peruvian coastline with his pregnant wife Mariela. To her and the townspeople who adore him, Miguel is the perfect citizen, but unbeknownst to them, he is deeply in love with Santiago, a painter who lives on the fringe of local life due to his agnosticism and homosexuality. When Santiago accidentally drowns in the ocean, his ghost returns to haunt Miguel, begging him to find his body and bury it in accordance with the rituals of the town. If Miguel obliges, he will be outed to his friends and family, but if he doesn't, Santiago will never rest peacefully.
It's a hell of a great setup and a topical one at that. The setting is perfect and the actors are able. My problem with the film concerns tone and pacing, as it never really finds its footing. Not all ghost stories need be terrifying and not all love stories need be melodramatic, yet Undertow really misses the boat on injecting trace elements of either. Even as far as magical realism is concerned, there's nothing that enchanting about the goings on, and that reeks of missed opportunity. The film is quiet and slow, and that's all well and good, but a slight injection of urgency would work wonders.
Also, regardless of the ending, Miguel makes for a lacking protagonist, in that he is profoundly unlikable. I understand he's a man with a secret to keep, but must he dishonestly swear on the life of his newborn child even after obtaining indisputable proof of a higher power? That's just stupid, dude.
