In an effort by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) to improve local electricity grid and take more power from wind farms, Shetland will be the beneficiary of a one MegaWatt battery, which costs over 1 million, with part of the cost subsidized by a UK government grant. SSE has proposed to control the heating and hot water in many Shetland homes as part of a smart grid plan which the utility says, "in the absence of an interconnector cable, would allow an extra 10 MegaWatts of wind power to be generated in Shetland over and above that from the Burradale windfarm and the proposed three-turbine wind-to-heat project at Gremista."
The battery allows up to 1MW of power to be stored in cells. Another effort to stabilize supply and demand on the local grid is to fit new centrally controlled storage and water heaters in 1,000 Shetland homes, offering inexpensive power in exchange for the service the heaters provide for SSE.

These innovative energy storage strategies are part of SSE's bid for a 51 million grant from Ofgem towards an 81 million smart grid for Shetland and Orkney, known as the Northern Isles New Energy Solutions (NINEs).
