subject: Should You Choose The Same Contractor For All The New Driveways? [print this page]

In most cases the same contractor takes care of all the driveways in any new development. Of course, this is usually because the contractor is hired by the home builder. On the other hand when a group of neighbors are getting together to install new driveways or repair deteriorating ones they have the option to choose whomever they choose. This also allows them to take the time to come up with some good driveway ideas before they make a final selection of driveway designs.

Even if you only need repair on the driveways you can still make some changes to the driveway designs, especially if there is a need for resurfacing in the case of very old installation. Of course you will be somewhat limited unless the driveway is in such poor shape that it needs completely reinstalled but you can make some minor changes such as increasing the length or width, adding designs at the time of resurfacing or changing the material, a task that does require removing the entire driveway in some cases. For instance, you can install asphalt over concrete - you see this on road surfaces all the time.

There is certainly no reason everyone needs to use the same contractor, and if you want something unique it is probably a good idea to choose someone else. If each homeowner chooses someone different you are more likely to create a unique look because each person will be thinking differently. In addition the homeowners can let their individual contractors know they want someone different from the others so he will not be tempted to duplicate the design of the rest of your neighbors.
