DPR Construction HQ Honored with Orchid Award

The sustainable headquarters of DPR Construction received an Orchid from the San Diego Architecture Foundation, an organization that recognizes the best and worst of design projects in the city. The 24,000 square foot building is designed to be Net Zero Energy and is currently seeking LEED Platinum certification.

In addition to operable windows and skylights, DPR Headquarters features a photovoltaic system, day lighting system, low-flow plumbing fixtures, natural ventilation and roof monitors. The building was also built using FSC-certified wood; tile, drywall and metal tiles with high recycled content; carpeting from recycled materials; and other products with low-VOCs.

"Our San Diego office is a forward thinking, sustainable and vibrant office," said Jay Leopold, regional manager of DPR Construction in a statement. "We brought the outside in by creating a space that uses natural lighting and ventilation systems that not only promotes a quality work environment but also greatly reduces energy consumption. We are honored that our new office has been recognized by our industry peers."

Every year, the San Diego Architecture Foundation honors the best and worst design and planning projects in San Diego. The awards were announced on November 4, 2010.

Projects that received Orchids, denoting the best designs of 2010, include the Conrad Prbys Concert Hall at the University of California San Diego, the Elephant Odyssey project at the San Diego Zoo and the Q.

Projects that received Onions for less than stellar design include the Cruise Terminal and Utilities at Broadway Pier, the Proposed Charger Stadium and the North Coast Interstate 5 Corridor Widening.
