subject: The Unique Backside Is No More [print this page] Renault have been producing the Megane since 1995, it has been available as a 3 & 5 door hatchback, a saloon, a coupe, a convertible and an estate. Renault used the Megane platform for the Renault Scenic which is a compact MPV.
In 2002 Renault introduced the 2nd generation Megane; it was significantly different from the 1st generation model. The 2nd generation took its design inspiration from the Renault Avantime, it was voted European Car of the Year in 2003, it also achieved a 5 star Euro NCAP safety rating, and the Megane was the first small family car to achieve this.
The 3rd generation Megane was introduced in 2008 and is the current model. The latest Megane has lost the distinctive rear end that the 2nd generation had, which made it unique and eye catching. Renault opted to have two different designs for the 5 door hatch and the coupe, the coupe has a very aggressive and sportive design.
To cater for a wide market and offer buyers greater flexibility the new Megane comes with an array of engines to choose from. In the petrol range you have two 1.6 litre engines with either 99- or 109bhp. Then you have two turbocharged petrols, a 1.4 litre with 129bhp, and a 2.0 litre with 178bhp. There is also a 138bhp 2.0 litre that is only available with the CVT gearbox.
The diesel models consist of a 1.5 litre with either 85bhp or 105bhp, a 1.9 litre that comes with 128bhp and there is a 2.0 litre version which in manual form comes with 158bhp or 148bhp with an automatic transmission.
The new Renault Megane in Barrow in Furness may not have the quirky back end any more but it is still very sleek and stylish. The new engine line up is very impressive too offering smooth and quite motoring.
