subject: Is It Worth It To Replace Interior Doors? [print this page]

You have painted the walls in the rooms in your home. You have updated the ceiling and flooring. You have even updated the molding throughout the home to make it more modern. Have you thought about the interior doors, though? These doors, such as bedroom doors, room doors, bathroom doors, even closet doors often are not changed or updated when something happens to one of them. Should you be updating yours?

Replacing Hollow Core Doors

Most of the doors in homes in the United States over the last 50 years have been hollow core doors. While the interior is not exactly hollow, they are virtually hollow compared to a solid hardwood door. There is no reason not to use these doors unless you feel you do not want to, but if you do want to upgrade, consider panel doors. Most panel doors are solid hardwood, though some manufacturers are now offering faux panel doors.

There are several benefits to replacing and upgrading interior doors to panel doors.

1. The panel doors do not allow as much sound to pass through them. This keeps room-to-room noise at a low.

2. Panel doors allow more character with their deep-set design. This can add character to the rest of the room.

3. You can paint or stain these doors to match other wood throughout your home.

Interior doors should receive updates whenever you do significant updating to the rest of your home or the room. Although it may seem expensive, similar rooms or rooms in the same range of the home should have matching doors. For example, try to keep all bedroom doors the same for a consistent look.
