subject: Exterior Doors And Insulation [print this page]

Those who have older exterior doors are likely to find themselves needing a replacement due to the lack of insulation the door provides. If you purchase a new door today, you will probably purchase a pre hung frame. Pre hung frame doors are those that are set within the frame for you. You do not have to struggle to get the door hung plumb, though you will need to ensure that the door is level prior to installation. However, what to do about added insulation?

When purchasing a new exterior door, focus on the insulation needs of that door. For example, some of the most commonly purchased doors have all of the insulation needed. Others may need a bit more attention here. Some doors will require the investment of weather stripping, though most pre-hung doors will provide all of the necessary insulation.

If you are purchasing glass exterior doors, such as a sliding glass door, you will need to invest in weather stripping. This will eventually wear down and need replacing at some point. That is just common maintenance on most homes.

Most pre hung doors come with a steel or a wooden frame. You will need to remove the old doorframe and any other existing insulation surrounding the doorframe. When installing the new exterior doors, do focus on keeping it square. It is critical that the door seals tightly when it is closed and that it swings properly. Do this; and the insulation is likely nothing you need to worry about.

Unless you purchase exterior doors that are hollow or have a very low energy performance rating, you should not have to add extra insulation to the door.
