It doesn't matter if the fish is smoked or well cooked, it should be avoided. Mercury has been linked to a number of adverse health effects for both the mother and the child, but mostly the child. Mercury can cause birth defects, brain damage and developmental problems for the unborn child. As you can see, with results like these, there is no reason for you to be eating any fish with any mercury content at all while you are pregnant. Mercury is a substance that does not have to be ingested through the mouth to be consumed by the body. In fact, mercury used to be used in the bands of old time hats and people of that era we exposed to mercury in the lining of their hats. This is where the term "mad hatter" comes from. With this in mind, it is wise that you avoid both eating or touching any fish with a high mercury content. Mercury can cause some serious problems, but can be easily avoided if you refrain from eating fish while you are pregnant. If you must handle raw or cooked fish while you are pregnant, it is a good idea for you to handle this meat with rubber or latex gloves, as you would with raw meat.
