Looking to cross the Andes and explore the history and culture of Chile and Argentina? Then the Travesia 9 Day Explora journey is for you. The Travesias Program from the San Pedro de Atacama oasis in Chile to Cachi follows a route that crosses the impressive Andes mountain range, over the course of which we explore in depth the ancient culture and surprising geography of the Calchaqu valleys.
Once on Argentine side, we are based mainly in Cachi, the area where the first inhabitants in this vast region came to live thousands of years ago. The temperature is usually mild and the skies are almost always clear, making the region ideal for mountain climbing. The area, which is surrounded by mountains and far-reaching valleys, is home to many natural and cultural treasures. It was here that an important agricultural culture was developed.
Later, during colonial times, it was a busy hub where many roads joined, linking the viceroyalties of Peru and Ro de la Plata. For this reason, remnants of the Calchaqu indigenous culture coexist with traces of the Spanish colonial period, which can mainly be seen through the architecture.
On the Chilean side, we travel into the distinctive landscape of Atacama. Its lakes, wetlands, volcanos, salt flats and oases make it an astonishing place to visit.
The starting point was at a beautiful Lodge in San Pedro oasis used as a base to explore the diverse ecosystems that coexist in Atacama, as well as its ancient culture of which some of the original traditions still survive.
