Boarding housesare houses providing temporary or semi-permanent lodging. A boarding house provides one, in some cases more than one room which can be rented for a night or even weeks and months at times. The renters or the lodgers, can use the room for a limited duration of time while the right of ownership still remains with the landlord/landlady. Boarding houses provide a much more convenient and affordable alternative to the motels and hotels. These kinds of lodging facilities are particularly popular amongst students and tourists and even families during the holiday season.
Lodgers generally have a room all to themselves, while the rest of place can be accessed or shared with (the permission of) the owner of the house or/and rest of the lodgers. The lodger only rents the space or room (without exclusive possession), which gives the owner of the house the right to access the room or the rented space. The services provided by the boarding houses are not much different than those offered at motels. These services may or may not include a meal or two either for free or for a certain additional cost. Some of the other services offered by the boarding houses may include general maintenance, including cleaning and laundry.
Most boarding houses across the US and UK, provide three kinds of boarding facilities:
Bed and Breakfast
Half Board
Full Board
Bed and Breakfast is the most typical kind of lodging service offered. This kind of stay includes, like the name states, bed and breakfast. This kind of renting service is most popular amongst tourists looking for a place to spend only a night. Half Board is another kind of stay where the land owner offers bed and two meals, breakfast and dinner, to the lodgers. This kind of service is popular amongst college and varsity students. Several boarding houses across the college towns in the US dot the maps, where students make full use of these houses and the offered services. A full board stay includes bed with three meals, breakfast, lunch as well as dinner, and is most suitable for families with children as it provides an affordable alternative to the much costlier stay at hotels.
Boarding houses used to be a much more common sight in the US than they are today. With the ever increasing cost of living, people are once again are turning to more affordable lodging services rather than staying at motels. In the recent times of poor economic conditions, boarding houses have presented themselves as an attractive housing option for single tenants, traveling or seasonal workers, as well as poor people. Boarding houses provide cheaper lodging facilities on one hand, while on the other hand they also offer a steady and consistent source of income for the owner of the houses.
