No one likes having to pay for games, but there's something that's a lot worse. Paying for a game again. All it takes is a crumb of food on the floor, a few grains of dust/dirt on the table or anything of similar size to damage your game to an unplayable state.
Whilst I'm not suggesting you wear anti-static socks and handle your discs in a dust-free environment wearing a space suit, there are simple ways to keep your games playable and your wallet in tact.
My name's Shaun and I'm a PS3 player. I'm a big fan of the Call of Duty series, I enjoyed Haze and now I'm rocking Gran Turismo 5. However my turning point on how I treat my discs came after I bought a brand new copy of Modern Warfare 2 the day of launch - and dropped it on my keys the same day.
Turns out a disc was already in the console, I let go before I realised and the disc fell out of my PS3 straight on to my set of keys I'd hastily thrown on the floor after getting back. It might seem like nothing, but that's all it took for my game to freeze up on the 2nd mission. After furiously heading to the store and spending another $5 on getting the disc polished - I returned home to have the same thing happen.
Of course in this case there's nothing you can do except accept the fact you're just going to have to fork out another 60 bucks for the game you already bought (that's what I had to do anyway!)
Since then, I backup my games. It's really not hard to copy a game, and it's a hell of a lifesaver. Now every time I buy a new game, I simply stick it in my laptop or PC and make a quick copy, then voila - a copy that I can throw around to my hearts content. The original disc goes back in its box and on the shelf. Now if I damage the copy, I can just burn another like that.
It's not too easy to copy games and get them working properly however, that's why some clever guys made a program that'll do it all for you, there's no way I've got the patience to spend hours on each disc and not even get it right!
