Resolving error message "xxxx.pst can not be accessed 0x80040116." in Microsoft Outlook 2002

Microsoft Outlook 2002 and earlier versions limit the size of Personal Folders (PST) file to 2GB. Whenever the PST file reaches or exceeds that limit, you will not be able to open your PST file & access the important data inside it. This is generally called an oversized PST file problem. Large sized PST files are inconvenient to access and hence also reduce the overall speed of Outlook to a great extent that affects users work and may lead to .pst file corruption.PST files 2GB or above in size are more viable for corruption. MS Outlook has no built-in utility to rescue the oversized PST file that is inaccessible. Therefore in order to access your corrupted PST file, you need to use a Split PST Files software that can Split Large PST File into small sized PST files.

To illustrate above problem consider the following example. When you try to open or access an oversized PST file, an error message appears on the screen. On every attempt to open your PST file you will receive below error:

"xxxx.pst can not be accessed 0x80040116."

On encountering the above error message, you will be unable to access your MS Outlook emails & other important data. Mails that contains important data are of no use because they become totally inaccessible.

Cause:

The root cause for the occurrence of above error message is that PST file has reached its maximum size of 2GB & is showing abnormal behaviour because of its corruption.

Solution:

In order to resolve the above error message and access the inaccessible data, the user can opt for any of below mentioned 2 methods:-

Method 1:- If you have MS Outlook 2003 and its higher versions installed on your computer, then you can easily convert the oversized PST file into the new Outlook 2003 Unicode format, which doesn't have the 2GB limit. This is generally the most preferred method.

Method 2:- If you don't have MS Outlook 2003 and its higher versions, then you can Split Large PST File into several smaller files. Each file contains a part of the data in the original PST file, but it is less than 2GB and independent from the others so that you can access it separately with Outlook 2002 or lower versions without any problems.

In order to perform second method, you must go for an effective PST File Splitter software. These softwares have high scanning techniques that help in splitting large sized pst file into many small sized pst files quite efficiently. Many softwares are available in the market out of which Stellar Phoenix PST File Splitter v2.0 is the best amongst all.
