subject: Review Of Direct To Video Horror Film Trick 'r Treat [print this page]

If you are one of the many moviegoers that is tired of the endless remakes of horror classics, sick to the stomach with the never ending Saw sequels, and just want a taste of what horror films were and could be again, then have I got a treat for you. Michael Dougherty, who has a long work relationship with acclaimed director Bryan Singer, has made his directorial debut with the direct to video film Trick 'r Treat. The film was originally to be released in theaters, but after constant rescheduling, it was resolved that direct to video would make it easier to release.

The film reminds me a lot of the classic comic book series, Tales From the Crypt. In fact, there are even several comic book references laced throughout the film. It tells four stories, all interconnected by minor, but often amusing, details. A young virgin is seeking out her first time. A group of kids are seeking to pull the prank of a lifetime. A principal has a killer hobby. And finally, a grumpy old man meets a trick or treater that leaves quite an impression.

Instead of other anthology horror films that tell each story separately, this movies tells all of the stories running together, showing all of the connections between each story. The film also has a great balance of dark humor and horror. And perhaps the most appealing feature of the film is what could be considered its mascot, Sam. Sam is the little trick or treater with the burlap sack on his head. Sam is also a major character, but there is something just laugh inducing about his presence. And I mean that in a very good way. Another awesome feature of the film is the way that it respects and honors Halloween traditions, especially the classic rule of always checking your candy for razors. Each story is a cautionary tale of sorts, showing that sometimes what may seem like a trivial or even stupid action could prove to be the biggest, and quite possibly last, mistake of your life.

While the DVD has hardly any special features, the film itself is good enough for me to recommend for hard core movie fans to buy. This is the most fun I have had watching a horror film since the original Halloween film, and is definitely a film that should be watched with friends on Halloween.
