I had a DVD burner for about a month. We re-encoded movies via television, movies copied to DVD, film and used by the digital television receiver. I am satisfied with the quality of the film and HDTV. Editing scenes and add / delete bookmarks is very simple. I would buy it again.

Beware of the plug on the AC power cord
This HDD-DVD player/recorder seems to work quite well once you get it set up and work out the bugs. If you record to the hard disk in the HQ mode, the playback quality is very good, although not high definition. Formatting and finalizing disks with the source set to L3 works OK, but this workaround is NOT described in the manual (see Jeff4U comments for dealing with the E19 error). Also, during the first 3 weeks my recorder would consistently loose all its channels and timer data about every 4 to 5 days even though the electricity supply was stable. I found that the prongs on the plug at the end of the AC power cord are very thin and need to be bent or spread slightly to achieve good prong contact inside the electrical outlet. I also have the recorder plugged into a battery backup. Finally, if you are not an electrical engineer, don't be surprised if you have to read the 100-page manual a few times.
Awesome HDD recorder.
Great device for recording OTA programming. I have had it for 2 weeks and have used most of its features, .i.e., program OTA recordings; pause and rewind live TV; view DVDs; format and record to DVD-RW and DVD+R; dub from DVD to HDD; dub from HDD to DVD; edit a HDD recording to eliminate commercials; and finalize DVD+R recordings. They all work great--thanks to the work arounds documented by Jeff4U. I especially like the 1.3X playback feature that allows you to speed up the playback of any recorded program (HDD or DVD) by 1.3 times. One thing I was hoping to be able to do with this device, but have not been able to, is to temporarily record a OTA program on a DVD-RW (without finalizing the disc) and view it on my DVD+/-RW recorder (Sony) that I have in another room. The H2160MW9 manual claims DVD+RW are compatible with most DVD players, without having to be finalized. I ordered some DVD+RW and will update this review once I test this out.
Great machine!
This recorder is wonderful. I had to think a bit about the connections;
I made coax pass-thru[extra purchased 3' coax] from the 'In' on cable box
to the 'Out' on the recorder--this allows me to record a channel, and watch
a different one. I haven't used the dvd recording yet, only the HDD.
Practice a few times with programming, comes easy.
I recommend this unit, but don't know about finalizing disc.

A good HDD-DVD recorder
I also have and older unit the LiteOn HDD-DVD LVW 5045 that has a friendlier manual and an operating on screen system. My only compliant about the Magnavox is the instruction manual that in my opinion it is not very friendly, a bit confusing with some of the steps written for a very technical individual. Even I have problem setting the clock with the instruction about the PBS channel for the "Auto Clock Setting". Another confusing instructions are in the chapter about "Channel Setting" and the one on "Tuner Setting" I think that a more simple and basic explanation would be much more desirable. The equipment with the thing that I do so far, it is working all right.
