subject: Psychology Masters Programs Aim To Address Issues Within The Latin Community [print this page]

The Latin community is one of the fastest growing ethnic segments in the United States. While the presence of this culture is embraced, members of this community are still plagued with challenges surrounding dealing with and receiving care for mental health issues. Because of this very serious issue, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, as well as the Latina/o Mental Health Providers Network at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology decided to tackle it head on.

A small campaign that began nearly two decades ago, The Latino Behavioral Health Conference, has now become a yearly event designed to address the issues facing the Latin community as well as to help promote all areas of psychology, criminal psychology, and mental health training programs.

The outcome of events such as this, are undeniable. These programs work to empower various leaders within the community so that they can bring a new kind of awareness to the major issues that people face on a daily basis. By further promoting education, including psychology masters programs, individuals are given the proper tools needed to identify and deal with mental health conditions.

Topics at the conference are presented in an educational, yet interesting way. Storytelling techniques are utilized as a means to introduce therapy to the youth of the community, in order to communicate the importance of properly managing patients who have suffered a trauma, and to provide services to older adults within the community.

Programs such as the Latino Behavioral Health Conference are crucial to improving the overall health and well being of various segments of the community. By providing in-depth training and a more detailed understanding of particular issues, everyone has the opportunity to seek the treatment they need and are entitled to receive. This level of education ensures providers are able to treat all cultural issues with the proper level of respect and compassion.
