subject: Family Vacation In Vienna [print this page]

The colorful and musical city o f Vienna is not widely thought of as a destination for excitement and adventure. In truth, if you ask any kid where he or she would like to go on vacation, Vienna is not likely to be on the list. Vienna is most well-known for the various composers who were born, studied, and played there. However, the city holds more than historic and cultural interest. A Vienna destination can be a fun family getaway.

Visit a Museum that Focuses on Kids

Museums are wonderful and children will often find themselves enjoying history and culture. Just don't count on those types of museums being a highlight of your family vacation. Vienna's Zoom Kindermuseum offers kids the chance to interact with the exhibits. Children can immerse themselves in science, crafts, and exploration at this kid-focused attraction. Another plus to the Zoom Kindermuseum is that it implants a love of learning. What could be better than a day of entertainment that includes an education?

The Technisches Museum Wein documents the rise of technology from decades old gadgetry to modern inventions. Though the exhibits and demonstrations are in the German language, kids from everywhere can appreciate it for the fantastic "antique" robots and technological innovations.

You will find both of these museums in the central Museums quarter, where you can tour other museums of more mature interest.

Vienna is home to the Spanish Riding School. Here, you can watch the famous white Lippizzaner's perform for the crowd. Tickets are sold out quickly and must be purchased in advance. However, if you cannot get tickets before your trip to Vienna, you can still enjoy an afternoon of watching the training sessions. Children and adults alike will be amazed at the beauty, size, and skills of the world famous Lippizzaner stallions.

Tour Schloss Schonbrunn Palace

What kid doesn't like a palace? This baroque palace sits on the edge of the city. Though just 40 of the 1,441 rooms are open to the public, there is plenty to see on a family excursion to the Schloss Schonbrunn. If your kids tire of walking through the magnificently decorated exhibits, take them outside to the gardens, where they can explore a maze and visit the world's oldest zoo!

Amuse Yourselves at the Prater

Here, you will find all manner of amusement park rides, concessions, and bungee jumping. Kids will love the merry-go-round, ghost train, and go-cart tracks. Though there is plenty to do for the little ones, Prater is just enjoyable for adults. Love roller coasters? The Prater has them. Before you leave, make sure to take the entire family for a ride on the giant Ferris wheel, where you can sit at the top and take in a panoramic view of beautiful and bustling Vienna.

The key to keeping kids happy is to give them something to do and make no mistake, there will be plenty to see and do on your family vacation in the historical and welcoming city of Vienna.
