Reducing Knee Inflammation
Reducing Knee Inflammation

Knee inflammation is a very common occurrence of minor injuries inflicted on our knees. This kind of injuries could come about at any time caused by several conditions. These injuries could come about as a result of direct injury, falls, bad footing, sudden and jerky movements, lifting heavy weights and doing exercises not having enough warming up. Apart from these traumatic events, inflammation of the knee joint can also happen in some infections like viral fevers and in some cases where immune mediated inflammatory alterations occur in the body.

The main principle would be possibly local release of inflammatory mediators or migration of inflammatory immune cells to the knee joint. These mediators would respond to the injury which has happened in the knee or in some cases would injure the lining membranes of the knee joint hence precipitating a vicious cycle. The increased circulatory permeability would precipitate swelling in the damaged joint and sensory nerve endings activation would result in Knee Pain symptoms as well.

Therefore, a person can hope to get over a swollen knee pain simply after relieving these inflammation related responses. In most instances, the entire body itself can pass though such conditions unless of course we support the process, the length of time taken for recovery will be very much longer.

Therefore, let us discuss some of the measures to use in reducing these inflammatory responses.

1. Rest - probably one of most important steps of relieving inflammatory response is to break the vicious cycle that happens with further insult which aggravates the inflammatory condition and lengthen the recovery process. Hence, complete bed rest, utilization of crutches to avoid weight bearing, making use of splints...etc can be used in relaxing a knee joint.

2. Application of knee ice pack- using ice would be advantageous in the initial moments of an injury to reduce the inflammatory mediators being released also to prevent influx of mediators from elsewhere. The constricting nature of the blood vessels reacting to cold could be helpful in exerting this effect.

3. Compression - as vascular permeability stimulates fluid build up, using compression would stop the fluid from leaking out and cause swelling and also lessen the inflammatory response.

4. Anti-inflammatory medications - use of such medications would relieve the associated swollen knee pain and also the tendency to release inflammatory mediators.

5. Elevation - this is a technique to lessen the blood circulation towards injury site leading to accumulation of excessive fluids and also to help the draining of congested blood vessels in the region.

Putting aside the above inflammation minimizing practices, if the underlying cause is a medical problem or elsewhere in the body, it would be necessary for such conditions to be treated along with the previously mentioned treatment methods.
