subject: Do We Need All These Self Storage Facilities?
[print this page] Most people in the UK live life at 100mph, rushing here and there, doing one million and one things at once and it seems that in modern life we don't have the time or space for everything, which is why there are a number of self storage centres popping up around the country, but the thing we need to ask ourselves is do we really need them?
With most people owning or renting their homes or apartments surely they have enough space to store all their worldly possessions in one place? You would think so, but it appears not to be the case, otherwise all these self storage facilities would go out of business. Instead it is quite the opposite of that as more and more of these self storage units continue to spring up around the country.
Obviously the self storage centres supply more than just the local population with storage; there are also business opportunities to be acquired at many of the sites, with companies looking to rent business space off of the centres. It helps to provide smaller businesses with the opportunity to grow.
The fact still remains that it costs money to utilise these self storage sites and do people really need to use them? Most houses in the UK have garages, which can be used to store extra items. If the house doesn't feature a garage then there is usually a loft or a basement where items can be stored.
In some cases the loft may need some modifications made to it to make it available for storage, for instance the loft might need to be boarded out. Once this has been achieved items less than one metre in height should be able to be stored with ease, even longer items should be able to be laid down and stored. Having an extra layer of materials between your ceiling and the roof of the house should also help with keeping heat in.
The fact of the matter is that even with all these resources people still require self storage centres for additional storage. The reason I say that is because people are paying for the service and in the current economic situation people would not spend money needlessly. However, are we living beyond our means, clearly people have too many items these days and maybe we all need to scale down our lives and our ambitions so our worldly possessions fit into our houses.
