The first thing that you should do is to understand your dogs behavior. Remember, dogs have no sense of right or wrong. In order to establish this, you can employ the method of reward and punishment. When you dog does something good like waits patiently for his food bowl instead of jumping on you for it, pat him on the back or say things like good boy! This will give your puppy the idea that what he is doing is something good or acceptable. If, on the other hand, your dog does something bad like urinate on the carpet, you may punish your dog while he is in on the act. Note that you should reward or punish your dog while the behavior is happening, and not afterwards. Punishing your dog after the behavior has occurred will only confuse him and make the house training a much more difficult process.

Another step to house train your puppy would be to develop a schedule. Designate times for your dogs feeding, as well as times for eliminating. Do not allow your puppy to eat whenever it wants to eat. Also, spare a few minutes in a day, morning especially, to take your dog outside to eliminate. This will train your dog not to do it inside the house or practically anywhere.

Lastly, be consistent. Use the same commands for every act. This will help your dog associate it with the act that you demand from him. If you want your dog to sit, for example, say sit. Do not confuse your dog with using other command words for sit such as sit down or sit still.

Follow these tips on how to house train a puppy, and have an obedient dog that everybody will love.
