subject: If only governments would be clever enough to listen [print this page] If only governments would be clever enough to listen
With the epidemical rise in prevalence and incidence of the diseases of civilization, governments worry more and more about the enormous effects this has and will have on the costs of health care. The consequences of obesity, diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease may, if nothing is done, in future paralyse our entire system.
Back to the past
How can we solve the problem? Since it is clear that the abundance of sugars, starch, industrial vegetable oils and processed foods in the diet cause the diseases of civilization, the solution lays simply in dramatically reducing these foods. We need to go back to foods as consumed by our ancestors. Main part of their diet consisted of animal based foods.
Question
Having said this, the question rises: "Are we able to provide enough animal based nutrition to feed world's human population?"
Answer
The answer still is yes. We would have to make a step by step transition from the oil consuming (fertilizer, pesticides, transport) grain based food system to one that is animal based. This means we would have to give (mono)crop soils back to nature, and by doing so, make it possible for animals to find their food there again. Animals could live in spacious areas near villages and cities.
Change one's tack
With a human population of 6.8 billion people there is still enough space on earth to make this possible. Of course it means that the food industry has to change his tack. This forms quite a challenge, with a lot of fascinating new opportunities. For the sake of the wellbeing of mother earth, further growth of human population may not really be recommendable. So a world wide birth control may at the same time be considered.
